A Tradition For Over 70 Years
Western Pump was founded in 1948 by Walter Reed, Troy Reese, and Mac Daniels as a service station maintenance company. In 1974, the company was sold to two of the owners of R.H. Alexander Co., a Los Angeles based petroleum equipment distributor and service provider. At that time, the business was focused on equipment distribution and tank testing. Herb Chapin managed the San Diego operation until 1978 when William Biery Sr. took over and assumed ownership.
In 1988, Dennis and Jan Rethmeier acquired Western Pump and further developed the business to include construction, vehicle service equipment and compliance testing. In 2013, Dennis and Jan retired, and their son, Ryan Rethmeier, became president.
Today, Western Pump is a full-service provider supporting the fueling and transportation infrastructure facilities. We are the only integrated construction, service, maintenance, compliance, and equipment distribution company in Southern California. Western Pump remains a family-owned and operated business with strong traditional family values interwoven throughout the fabric of the company.
History Milestones
1948 - Western Pump is founded
Western Pump was founded in 1948 by Walter Reed, Troy Reese, and Mac Daniels as a service station maintenance company.
1974 - Sold to R.H. Alexander Co.
In 1974, the company was sold to two of the owners of R.H. Alexander Co., a Los Angeles based petroleum equipment distributor and service provider. At that time, the business was focused on equipment distribution and tank testing.
1974 - 1978 - Herb Chapin manages San Diego operation
Herb Chapin managed the San Diego operation until 1978 when William Biery Sr. took over ownership.
1988 - Sold to Dennis and Jan Rethmeier
In 1988, Dennis and Jan Rethmeier acquired Western Pump and further developed the business to include construction, vehicle service equipment and compliance testing.
1993 - Second Generation
The second generation joined the family business in 1993. Ryan and Derek Rethmeier joined the Western Pump team.
2012 - Ryan Rethmeier becomes President
Dennis Rethmeier is appointed PEI President. Ryan Rethmeier becomes Western Pump President.
2013 – Dennis and Jan Rethmeier retired
25 years after taking over ownership, Dennis and Jan Rethmeier retired.
2016 – Completed Largest Specialty Construction Project to Date
Western Pump was selected to construct the fueling and car wash systems for a massive two-million square-foot ConRac facility at the San Diego International Airport.
2019 – Launched General Contracting Division with Sycuan Casino Project
Western Pump was retained to design and build a state-of-the-art fuel station and retail center for the Sycuan Casino.
